These are the reasons that I hate e-learning.

    * Unmotivated learners or those with poor study habits may fall behind
    * Lack of familiar structure and routine may take getting used to
    * Students may feel isolated or miss social interaction
    * Instructor may not always be available on demand
    * Slow or unreliable Internet connections can be frustrating
    * Managing learning software can involve a learning curve
    * Some courses such as traditional hands-on courses can be difficult to simulate

Great review, Chad. I attended a few sales pitches myself. I know Brent will do a good job of minimizing that at future events. I didn't get a chance to meet you in San Jose, but hopefully at the next conference somewhere. Until then, see you on Twitter and around the web.

Cheers,
Brian

David, Laurel, Michael and Brent... Thanks you all for coming by my blog and taking the time to read the post and then comment. Very appreciated.

I too know that big things do lie ahead and with the "alpha geeks" out there driving development and the continued adoption of open-source tech and advanced authoring tools, it really only a mater of time before the selling of IT teams on the tech is dramatically easier.

I'm glad there are people out there like you Brent, thanks for pushing things with the Guild. Very cool to have met you.

Hi Chad!
This is an outstanding and thoughtful review. Thank you for taking the time to communicate your thoughts and feelings on DevLearn08. I especially like the realization that a large percentage of eLearning professionals are behind the technology curve. Our goal for DevLearn each year is to help solve that.

You are correct in that..."The conference seemed to be meant to acclimate eLearning professionals with some of the more advanced or new technological trends in eLearning today."
This is by design. I'm a little geeky so I follow Scoble, and SXSW, and all the other geek activities, but MOST of the eLearning community does not. So, DevLearn is meant to fill that void. I like to think we do a pretty good job.

I'm sorry to hear about the sales pitches you encountered in the sessions. That is NOT supposed to happen and the vendors are aware of that being a concern. We know the primary violators by reviewing the feedback closely. It was interesting to see some of the "sales pitching" speakers get publicly flogged via twitter in real time. I can't help but wonder if that will help curb this type of activity in the future. Public humiliation is not good for business ;-)

Chad, please stay connected with the eLearning community. We need many more participants like you.

Cheers!

Thanks for the summary, Chad. I did not get an opportunity to see the Adobe Summit, so it was good to read about some of the upcoming tools. I, for one, am one of the "behind the time"-ers when it comes to learning with Web 2.0 tools, so it was a real eye-opener on where our opportunities and potential lie ahead.
