The AppleTV does what Apple wants it to do as a first generation device. Do iPods do more now than they did when they where introduced? of course. This is what will happen with the AppleTV new versions will add functionality. The fact that it is being hacked doesn't mean Apple didn't test it - it show that yes it is a powerful device with a bright future as new functionality is added. Maybe those who thing they have a been idea of what the AppleTV should be should build and sell their own device - mmm maybe we will see the TomTV LMAO!!!!

Apple tv is a nice idea but I think too limited. People shouldn't have to hack it to make it better. All the thoughts people are putting together for it, Apple should have thought about. What? Apple doesn't test their products first?? Just says "oh we'll make some crap and send it out, people will buy it because we're Apple" ... and they'll pay too much. I'm sorry but while I think it's neat, I think it's not worth anymore than $100. I wouldn't pay anymore for it than that. With my $80 DVD recorder that plays DivX and other codecs...I can simply put everything on DVD or re-writable DVD and play. Apple TV should have a record function -- it should replace tivo etc. But right now it's just a glorified TV out card for your computer. Big deal... I can hook my computer to my TV with a long cord... or maybe find some wireless alternative.

Lawrence,
I believe the product will like crazy, so your portfolio needn't be a worry. Apple Devotees and Podcast fanatics love the device and the reviews are all very positive. For people like us... it's a bit hobbled, yes... but for my Dad or someone like that, it would just simply work and be really easy.

The AppleTV is very underwhelming. Streaming video from the computer is something I want, but I can get that with an XBox 360 (and play games as well), or a PS3 or Wii using a service like ORB.

Soon, Slingmedia will introduce the SlingCatcher to placeshift from the PC to the TV. And the way their product works makes much more sense: it is designed to placeshift whatever is on the screen. That means you don't need to worry about file formats or whatever. Sling also says it will be released mid-year for less than $200... so it does more and costs less.

Apple, oh Apple... for the sake of my stock portfolio, what are you thinking???
