And to this I say… “Beeyah!”
Adobe is winning developers and MS is losing them… Ryan Stewart’s article sure makes the future seem bright to me… My company is located in a region where most companies are developing using C#, Java and C++, etc. for their RIA/desktop apps. I see a lot of potential to make inroads using Flex and Apollo.
SIDEBAR: I am really looking forward to dropping Multidmedia’s Zinc. Have I mentioned that lately? Sorry, a little bitter here. Anyone out there using that app? While the capabilities it adds to a Flash projector are really cool, it comes at price. More difficult debugging, versioning issues, etc.
Back to the topic at hand. Being a Mac user, WPE/WPF isn’t really a development option for me… Especially since I’m still on a PPC based Powerbook for my primary machine (I could use bootcamp or Parrellels/VMWare then).
This post over at Robert Scoble’s blog is interesting… just what is Adobe showing next week? Something juicy I bet. Apollo Community Preview (Probably.)? Flash 9/CS3 Release Date (Possibly)? Flex/Flash IDE for Linux (I know that’s crazy - But just think about what that could do for the developer community for one second)? Seems like every chance they get they are stealing MS’s thunder and spoiling the .Net3.0 coming out party.
Very interesting times indeed.

I’m not sure how juicy it’s going to be next week. I think it’s mostly customer focused, but either way, it should be a good time!

I agree. The future looks really bright for our community. Announcing a Linux version of Flex Builder would be a nice warning shot across Microsoft’s bow. Actually, it would be like the warning shot that landed right in the control tower. That would be sweet.

Zinc has been a disappointment from the start.
It’s never done everything it claimed cross platform and each new version is like a box of CrackerJacks - there’s always a new suprise inside.
I am so ready to give Apollo a try.

I’m really looking forward to Apollo myself, but come on — it’s a completely different animal. IMO Apollo will target, and probably very well serve, a relatively small niche (compared, say, to slightly larger “niches” targeted by Java, C# and C++) — but it’s a small one.
Don’t get me wrong — I think Apollo will be great! We have a couple of apps that will surely benefit from it, given what I’ve seen so far, and I can’t wait to give it a try myself. But suggesting it’s some sort of tactical volley against Microsoft is just plain silly. It’s not — it’s simply a product created to serve a single, specific need.
Microsoft is not “losing developers,” man. Adobe’s simply gaining a few cross-trainers.

Zinc’s only semi-redeeming quality is support for Flash 9/Flex…though when I was experimenting with that it was a total disaster because I didn’t build my app from the ground up with Zinc in mind as the publishing wrapper. Mostly, I can’t wait for Apollo and I’d love to see support for publishing to J2ME/BREW to target mobile devices.
